Two Reddit Brand Strategies: Build Your Own Subreddit or Participate in Existing Communities

Updated: 13 hours ago

Reddit users are famously hostile to traditional marketing. They question motives by inspecting posting histories, and reject brands that enter a community only to collect clicks.

A campaign that works on other social media platforms like LinkedIn, X, Instagram, or Facebook can fall apart within minutes on Reddit.

Consequently, most marketers are afraid of Reddit.

That fear often pushes brands toward one of two mistakes. They either avoid Reddit completely, leaving important questions unanswered, and valuable conversations along with search visibility to competitors, or they enter too aggressively and immediately start promoting their brand.

Neither approach works particularly well.

This is why every brand needs a strong Reddit Marketing Strategy which usually follows one of two paths:

  1. Build your own subreddit.

  2. Participate consistently in subreddits where your audience already gathers.

At Uncle Orca & Team, we have direct experience with both.

Strategy One: Build Your Own Subreddit

Your first instinct might be to push users toward your website or other call to action button. That is not how Reddit works. Instead, build a useful destination within the platform itself in the form of a subreddit.

A subreddit gives your brand a place to publish content, answer questions, encourage discussion, gather feedback, and develop a recognizable community over time.

There are two primary ways to approach this:

Create a topic-based subreddit

A topic-based subreddit is organized around an interest, industry, problem, or audience etc, rather than a company name.

This structure often gives the community more room to grow because people can join based on a shared interest, even when they have never heard of the company or the agency managing it.

We used this approach with r/sportsinusa, a subreddit focused on memorable footage, sports nostalgia, historical moments, and discussions from across American Sports.

Rather than treating the community like a promotional channel, we concentrated on giving sports fans a reason to visit, comment, and return.

This approach helped the subreddit reach the top 10 in Reddit’s “Sports News & Discussion” category.

The lesson we learnt was straightforward. People joined for the topic first and then visibility followed through consistently managing and maintaining the essence of the community.

Create or co-manage a brand-based subreddit

A brand-based subreddit is directly connected to a company, creator, publication, or product.

It can become a destination for:

  • Customer questions

  • Educational content

  • Community discussions

  • Product feedback

  • User-generated posts

  • Announcements and updates

This structure works especially well when a brand already has an audience, educational framework, subscription, product, or body of content capable of supporting regular discussions.

However, such a subreddit still needs to offer more than company news and promotional links. People need a reason to participate even when they are not buying something.

One example of such a subreddit would be r/TarotVerbatim, which we co-manage and which is centered on a specific method of reading, teaching, and discussing tarot.

What if a subreddit already exists?

Before creating a new community, search Reddit for your brand name, product names, and common spelling variations.

A customer, fan, employee, critic, or unrelated moderator may already be operating a subreddit associated with your brand.

In that situation, do not begin by demanding control. Contact the existing moderators respectfully. Reddit communities often have their own history, culture, and expectations. A collaborative approach is far more likely to lead to a productive relationship.

Understand the commitment

Running a subreddit is not a one-time campaign.

It requires:

  • Regular posting

  • Comment moderation

  • Rule enforcement

  • Member responses

  • Content experimentation

  • Long-term consistency

Growth may be slow during the early stages. However, building your own subreddit gives you the strongest opportunity to shape your brand’s Reddit presence over time.

You are not merely borrowing attention from another community. You are building a destination where the conversation can continue forever.

Strategy Two: Find The Right Subreddits For Your Brand

Reddit is not one large audience. It is a network of thousands of micro-communities, each with its own language, rules, expectations, inside jokes, and preferred content formats. And the goal is not to participate everywhere, but to identify the limited number of communities where your expertise, content, and perspective can genuinely contribute.

Therefore, not every brand should create a subreddit immediately. In many cases, the better starting point is identifying the communities where your customers already spend time.

Step one: Build a keyword list

Start by listing 15 to 60 priority keywords connected to your business.

These might include:

  • Product categories

  • Industry terminology

  • Competitor names

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Hobbies and interests

  • Product use cases

  • Customer pain points

For example, a financial software company might search for terms related to budgeting, bookkeeping, freelance taxes, small-business accounting, and cash-flow management.

A sports brand might search for specific leagues, teams, athletes, historical moments, memorabilia, or fan communities.

The wider your initial keyword list, the more likely you are to uncover communities that would not appear through an obvious Reddit search.

Step two: Search each keyword on Reddit

Search each keyword individually.

Pay attention to:

  • Which threads appear for each keyword

  • Which subreddits they come from

  • How recent the discussions are

  • Whether the comment sections remain active

  • Which questions appear repeatedly

  • What types of posts receive strong engagement

  • Whether brand representatives are already participating

This exercise reveals where your audience is already asking questions and exchanging information.

Step three: Document the relevant subreddits

Create a spreadsheet and record every relevant subreddit you discover.

Useful columns may include:

  • Subreddit name

  • Weekly visitors

  • Primary topic

  • Posting rules

  • Self-promotion policy

  • Common post formats

  • Relevant keywords

  • Potential content ideas

  • Notes on community culture

However, do not evaluate a subreddit only on the basis of its weekly visitor or member count alone. A smaller, highly focused community may produce better conversations, stronger relevance, and more qualified attention than a massive general interest subreddit.

Step four: Prioritize eight to ten subreddits

Once the research is complete, narrow your list to approximately eight to ten priority subreddits.

These should be communities where:

  • Your target audience is clearly present

  • Your expertise is directly relevant

  • You can contribute without forcing a sales message

  • The rules support your intended participation

  • The discussions are active enough to justify continued effort

  • You can provide a distinct perspective or resource

This list becomes your working Reddit ecosystem.

As a final step, monitor these communities, study successful posts, answer questions, participate in discussions, and gradually establish credibility.

Which Reddit Strategy Should Your Brand Choose?

Building your own subreddit gives you greater control and stronger long-term positioning, but it requires sustained effort.

Participating in existing subreddits provides access to established audiences, but you must earn trust inside communities you do not control.

For many brands, the strongest approach combines both strategies.

Build a subreddit that serves as your long-term community destination. At the same time, participate thoughtfully in a focused group of relevant subreddits where your audience is already active. One strategy creates a lasting presence inside Reddit. The other helps your brand earn visibility across the wider platform.

Both depend on the same principle:

Provide value to the community before asking the community to provide value to your brand.
